Name:Office Product Spawning Wmic id:ffc236d6-a6c9-11eb-95f1-acde48001122 version:9 date:2024-11-28 author:Michael Haag, Splunk status:production type:TTP Description:The following analytic detects any Windows Office Product spawning `wmic.exe`, specifically when the command-line of `wmic.exe` contains `wmic process call create`. This behavior is identified using data from Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) agents, focusing on process and parent process relationships. This activity is significant as it is commonly associated with the Ursnif malware family, indicating potential malicious activity. If confirmed malicious, this could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary commands, leading to further system compromise, data exfiltration, or lateral movement within the network. Data_source:

how_to_implement:The detection is based on data that originates from Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) agents. These agents are designed to provide security-related telemetry from the endpoints where the agent is installed. To implement this search, you must ingest logs that contain the process GUID, process name, and parent process. Additionally, you must ingest complete command-line executions. These logs must be processed using the appropriate Splunk Technology Add-ons that are specific to the EDR product. The logs must also be mapped to the `Processes` node of the `Endpoint` data model. Use the Splunk Common Information Model (CIM) to normalize the field names and speed up the data modeling process. known_false_positives:No false positives known. Filter as needed.
