Name:Linux Usermod Root UID Set id:fe143ad6-ef29-4571-be14-0cd08a32ff34 version:1 date:None author:Raven Tait, Splunk status:production type:TTP Description:The following analytic detects the use of usermod to set a user's UID to 0. This functionally sets the user as a root user with full permissions. This approach can be used to bypass regular privilege escalation mechanisms, giving the attacker full control over the system while appearing as a regular user in most monitoring tools. Data_source:

how_to_implement:The detection is based on data that originates from Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) agents. These agents are designed to provide security-related telemetry from the endpoints where the agent is installed. To implement this search, you must ingest logs that contain the process GUID, process name, and parent process. Additionally, you must ingest complete command-line executions. These logs must be processed using the appropriate Splunk Technology Add-ons that are specific to the EDR product. The logs must also be mapped to the `Processes` node of the `Endpoint` data model. Use the Splunk Common Information Model (CIM) to normalize the field names and speed up the data modeling process. known_false_positives:Setting a user's UID to 0 is extremely rare in legitimate administration — there is almost no valid operational reason to create a second root-equivalent account this way. False positives are expected to be very low. Verify any alert against change management records before dismissing.
